Starfury to Not Get More Updates

On the #SpaceEmpires IRC channel today, Aaron Hall of Malfador Machinations answered a few questions about Starfury.

When asked about the lack of updates for Starfury, Aaron told us that he hasn't "gotten many bugs reports in the last 6 months for Starfury. If you have new ones, please email me."

"After SE5, we're starting work on Starfury 2. Unimplemented features will have to wait for Starfury 2. Talking to other ships really needs some voice acting. What Starfury 2 really needs is a campaign editor."

Strategy First Opens Forums

After dragging their heels for months, Strategy First, new publisher of Malfador Machination's games, has finally opened some forums for Space Empires IV and the upcoming Space Empires V. Unfortunately, they have forgotten about Starfury, which is the only one of the 3 games that has actually been released by Strategy First thus far.

You can visit the new forums with the following link: Space Empires Universe Forums

Interstingly, the setup of the forums is almost a direct copy of Shrapnel Game's SE4/5 forums, containing exactly the same subforum categories, though at least they added their own description text. Strategy First has apparently taken great pains to help the crossover of fans from the Shrapnel forums to the new SE forums at Strategy First. We here at SEnet believe that most of the current fans of SE will likely remain on the Shrapnel forums for some time to come, however.

Strategy First also seems to have neglected to list the new Space Empires forums on their community page.

Clandestine Starfury Updates

As reported by Hanitrader in this thread, the retail version of Starfury apparently includes several bug fixes. Unfortunately, there is currently no patch available for download from Malfador.com. The web site does not even make any mention of this updated version 1.17. We will report back to you when we have more news on this issue.

The Malfador Machinations category of the Shrapnel Games Intel Forums has diasappeared, though the actual game forums themselves remain mostly active.

The game specific forums have been shuffled off to new locations.

The Space Empires IV and Space Empires V forums have been merged into a new Space Empires IV & V forum, located in the Shrapnel Community category.

The Space Empires: Starfury forum has also been moved to the Shrapnel Community category.

The Dungeon Odyssey forum has been moved to the Our Archives category. As such, it is now closed to new postings.

Starfury Goes Retail

On May 10, Strategy First, the new publisher of Malfador Machinations' Space Empires games, announced that Starfury will be sold in retail stores starting June 2005. SpaceEmpires.net wishes Malfador the best of luck in the retail market!

The title will sell for $19.99, placing it just above the bargain bin rack.

Unfortunately, Strategy First's press release is somewhat misleading. Jay Podilchuk, the Producer at Strategy First, is quoted as saying that you will be able to "conquer the universe in one of the first 3D 4X games ever created.” Starfury is most certainly not a 4X game, or even a strategy game. It is in fact a so-called "action RPG."

Gandalf will be online starting at 3PM UTC tomorrow (Saturday, February 26, 2005) and hopes to stick around until the problem can be solved and we can get Starfury running on Linux. Hopefully this will allow Space Empires V to also run on Linux... ;-)

Version 1.03:
1. Fixed - Missing objects from SpaceObjects_XFiles would cause the
game to crash during map generation.
