PBW Is No More

Geoschmo, chief administrator of the PBW service, has posted an open letter to the community about the closure of PBW. The letter is transcribed below for your convenience.

It is my sad duty to inform you that the Space Empire Play By web site, PBW as it’s known by it’s loyal fans, will not be returning. At least not any time in the foreseeable future, and not ever in it’s current form. The server suffered a hard drive failure and due to poor planning and lack of diligence on my part, the backup plan was not sufficiently robust to recover the lost data.

If there is a bright side to this it is that the number of people seriously affected will be small. While we still have a dedicated core of game owners and players using the site regularly, time has taken it’s toll on our user base. For a site like this to last nearly a decade is extraordinary, but it is true that nothing lasts forever. While I always said I’d keep the site running as long as people wanted it and were using it, perhaps that was never a realistic commitment.

For those of you with active games currently on the site, we would love to be able to assist you in transitioning your games to PBEM or another format. Unfortunately, having lost all the user and game data, we are unable to render any such assistance. You can continue your game via email from your most recent turn if you can make contact with your game owner and the other players. If you are unable to contact your game owner, or if he does not have the game password, unfortunately your game has come to a premature and abrupt end as well.

My heartfelt thanks go out to all the PBW Admins over the years who helped me keep things running a smoothly as they did. You did what you did for the love of the game, asking nothing in return but the opportunity to play, and to be a part of building and maintaining this community.

Thanks to all the loyal game owners and players. Without you, this truly could not have happened. Again, I apologize for how this ended, but hopefully the effort put into providing you with this site for all these years will temper your feelings of disappointment.

Thanks to Malfador Machinations for creating such an addictive game. And thanks to all the folks at Shrapnel Games for supporting the game and the PBW site for all these years, even after your relationship with Malfador came to an end.

And a special thanks to the Admiral for starting this journey all those years ago. Though you haven’t been involved in the site for some time, you’ve always been a part of it. Your help and encouragement were crucial in keeping it going as long as it did, and your guidance has helped me in my career beyond PBW as well.

Sincerely,

PBW Down Time

PBW, the fan-run multiplayer gaming server for Space Empires 4 and 5, will be down for an unspecified amount of time.

Geoschmo, lead admin of PBW, posted this about the issue over on Shrapnel forums:

"We've had some sort of disk failure on the server. The drive which has all the game versions and most of the site data was throwing errors and when I rebooted windows did a disk check and it looks like we lost a large part of the data on that drive. I'm trying to figure out if I can recover it. We are looking at a few days down time I'm guessing at best."

RSS Feed Updates

The RSS feeds for the forums have been updated. This may have resulted in receiving extraneous updates in the last half hour or so for some users. We apologize for the inconvenience, but its a necessary evil.

Before the update, the feed script was just linking to the first page of the thread and displaying the text of the last post. This resulted in duplicate RSS entries for multiple posts in the same thread. Now, the feed script actually gets data on individual posts, and links accordingly. In the future, the forum feeds should be more useful.

NEW SE File Tracker

I've installed a new Bit Torrent tracker on SEnet, to alleviate the need to run it from home. :) More excitingly, it will allow users to upload their own torrents!

It is located at:

http://bt.spaceempires.net/

You will need to redownload all torrents you may be seeding. You can just point them to the same saved files and avoid redownloading data, naturally.

Note that I have not installed a mail server on the server as of yet. If you wish to register an account, you will need to await me confirming it. Torrents can be downloaded without registration.

Downloads Offline

Due to mounting bandwidth usage, the Downloads section has been taken offline for the rest of the month. We urge you to consider using the SE File Tracker for more of your downloads.

The tracker has shipset megapacks for both SE4 and SE5, allowing you to get most shipsets in one large package. Some of the more popular SE4 mods are already available, and we will be adding more shortly.

To use the tracker, you will need a Bit Torrent client, such as uTorrent or Azureus. For optimal performance, you will want to forward the port your chosen client uses, as per PortForward.com.

Default Theme Change

Henceforth, the default theme for the site shall be ExtraLiteBlue, instead of SpacePilot3k.

While SpacePilot3k is a nice theme, it is a little heavy, with lots of images involved. The new ExtraLiteBlue default has the same general style (white text in blue boxes on black background), but without any extra images to load.

Registered users can still use the old SpacePilot3k theme by selecting it in "Your Account." Feel free to check out the other available themes as well.

For fun, here is a chart of how many members use each theme on this date:

Default: 926
3D-Fantasy: 7
Aeolus: 8
Anagram: 6
Chronicles: 7
DarkBlue: 9
ExtraLite: 5

SEnet Pages Open for Business

SEnet Pages is open for business. Pages is a module which allows the site's members to create their SE-related own web sites for free.

Any registered member can create web sites with the module. You can choose to have the site display the SEnet menu structure, or take up the full page for itself. The Pages module currently uses the default SEnet theming information for page styles (or the user-selected theme for logged in users).

When creating your site, you can select various tags associated with the content of the site (eg: Mod, Race Style). These tags will help others find your site.

Pages are formatted with a restricted set of HTML. Paragraph and line break tags are not necessary and should not be used, as line breaks will automatically be converted to tags.

The ability to upload images has not yet been finalized. For now, you must use an external image hosting site, such as Image Shack. Please do not use the SEnet Image Gallery to upload images for your sites.

If you would like to host files on your site (such as your mod or ship set), you should submit them to the regular SEnet Downloads database as normal. You can then include a link to the download on an appropriate page.

Classic SE4 Styled Games Unearthed

You might remember the two games posted on Shrapnel by Ed Marshal long ago, Drukman and a space shooter. Or maybe not. While looking up info on Ruatha's SE4 Companion, I discovered that he had included the two long-lost games by Ed Marshal as plugins.
The first game is the classic Drukman, a Pacman styled game with a Drushocka as the protagonist.
The second game is a space shooter game where you defend against an Eee invasion in a Terran battle cruiser.

Strategy First Acquires Malfador Machinations

According to Wargamer.com, Aaron Hall has sold all Space Empires intellectual property rights to Strategy First, taking on a management position of the franchise.

"We have monitored the consumer acceptance of the Space Empires franchise since entering into an exclusive distribution and publishing agreement with Malfador in early 2005. The remarkable, ongoing sales of existing games and the tremendous, built-up anticipation for the release of Space Empires V give us confidence that the intellectual property we have acquired will have long-term value as the preeminent space genre game franchise."

Space Empires Wiki

Today in a bold move, after a call to action in the SEIV Shrapnel Community forums posted by inigma, Space Empires.net announces the creation of the Space Empires Wiki Documentation Project (or SEW) at http://wiki.spaceempires.net.

SEW (Space Empires Wiki or SE Wiki) is a wikipedia.org-like wiki. That means its a publically-updateable on-the-fly comprehensive community-editable library of all the strategy guides, FAQs, and encyclopedias of Space Empires, its mods, its players, and its evolution; editable by all, owned by none, and updated at will. Mod manuals can be posted and updated anytime, strategies can be drafted, organized, and updated immediately, and the names of the latest and greatest of anything and everything Space Empires can be found there and updated. Most importantly it aims to be the place to point newbies to when answering any question about Space Empires, as veterans are encouraged to add/edit/create new answers there and then reference newbies to it.

Moreover, it's a place where users can feel free to contribute information about Space Empires, but also create, update and contribute information about their own empires and characters. "When we mean it's a one stop shop for Space Empires documentation, it's really a one-stop shop," inigma was quoted as saying.

Camulus might still be alive, but where is he?

For the past nine months now the sudden disappearance of Camulus of the Soban Dominion, creator of the Zhentara shipset, has yet to be explained. He just up and left without any warning, but now rumors are starting to pop up that he might still be alive.

Sightings of the starship Galgothna Cumulus’s personal battleship have been reported in remote parts of the galaxy. Witnesses say that a peculiar rift in space-time opened before them and all power was lost for a time, weird creatures teleported onto there ship and started to devour the crew. Captain Glor Dex of the trade ship Palnama described the experience as if Hell itself opened its gapping maw to swallow them. Just as all hope seemed to be lost, he said a Soban craft with the insignia Galgothna came out from the rift and fired upon the strange organisms attacking them. When the Galgothna had driven the enemy back into the opening she herself flew straight into it and sealed it from the inside with what scanner records say was a type of string parcticle beam, the very thing that subspace is said to be comprised of.

It is unknown if the crew of the Galgothna is still alive or even in control of the ship, but the possibility still remains. Camulus might still be out there.
