I've got very detailed and accurate SW map from nav-computer.com and have overlayed a 60x60 grid. This has given me a very acurate coordinate system for all the stars on the map!
Makes things easy to make a truely HUGE map. This mod will have Lots of systems. and shouldn't take too long to get ready either.

Careful; SF maps are 60x56.

Well, I was testing positioning, and I got a system in the bottom right corner with the following settings:
System Xloc := 59
System Yloc := 55
(with the offsets at the top set to one)
Smarter than your average Texrak.

This is for all you lurkers snooping in on what's going on. We're looking at a Quadrant map of just under 200 systems!! Probably around 180-ish. That part is nearing completion then testing of the map begins.

I have no idea where I got that number of systems from... I did some more work on it during my lunch break and I'm up to 216 systems already. Probably going to be closer to 300 by the time I'm done.

Grand total is 345 systems. In case anyone is curious, this is the SW map with the 60x60 grid overlay that I used to plot all the systems. Nearly all are away from the edges and those that aren't I've moved in slightly so they should all fit.
Now comes the hard part... the warp lines!

Have you loaded tho 60x60 map in-game yet? I don't think it will work right...

Because that's boring? All you need to do is specify a quadrant file and use the SF random map generator. It will make the campaign data file and all of the system files. Then you can just tweax the dozen or so systems that have knomn features (Hoth, Yavin, Tatooine, etc). Accuracy of random systems isn't that much of a concern, methinks.

what I'm doing now is putting the color of the systems not by the controling faction but by their location (Outer Rim, Inner Rim, Deep Core, etc). Then I'm going to color the Warp lines based on the trade routes in SW. Those systems along the major trade routes will have more warp connections between them than other distant systems. That parts gonna take some work but shouldn't be too difficult.

Been trying to test the map now but I keep getting a range check error. have very little idea of what I can do about this...

I would not know. I used to get a lot of RCE's when using the mapping tool so I bagged it. Sorry to hear its happening to you now.

first thing I'm going to do is check the edge systems. If that doesn't fix it, I'm going to break the file into smaller pieces (say 80 systems at a time) and see if I can track down if there is a specific part causing the problem.
