What am I doing wrong? I'm playing an organic race and stumbled upon a neutral race early on. I've destroyed 2 of their 3 planets with just the Homeworld left. I've assaulted it maybe 7 or 8 times now. I've used most permutations of acid, arc and spine weapons with mounts running from gatling to heavy but I can't seem to scratch it.

During the combat replay my fleet approaches to meet the 2-300 fighters disgorging from the Homeworld. I chew through these fighters and any other enemy ships caught in the way (mainly scouts and transports by now) but once the field is clear my ships just seem to hover around the planet getting decimated.

On the replay my ships are definitely firing on the planet but every time the Homeworld starts with 18 weapons platforms and they end with 18 weapons platforms (I can fake a second attack right after with a ship I leave in reserve to confirm this).

I'm using a fleet of around 70 ships with a 30/70% split of light cleavers and spawns. The spawns each have a napalm bomb and a single heavy mount acid globule (240 damage) (but I gotta stress I've used heavy arcs, heavy spine throwers, hard parasites with or without the napalm bombs - all with similar effects, ie none).

In general my ships default to Optimal firing but I've toyed with some of the other strategies too, again without success.

The best damage I've managed so far is 1% with all weapons platforms intact.

Is there something I'm missing?

Yes, you can't easily glass a homeworld in Adamant.

The starting facilities on your homeworld generate 5000 phased shielding each, as well as most of your research, intelligence, and starting resources, and your planet is pretty much filled with these, excluding the SY, Resupply and Space Port (if you didn't take Natural Merchants).

That applies to all races, so don't expect to have an easy time glassing HWs. Wink

You will have anywhere from 10,000 (Tiny) points to 175,000 (Massive Gas Giant) points, at my reckoning. I might be a little off on the number for the MGG, though.

You can't have a tiny, massive or huge planet as a HW on a random map.

Heavy mounts make your weapons do less damage overall, so you probably do not want to use them against a HW. Also, try bringing some dedicated napalm ships.

If you find them too tough to crack, you can modify the shields generated by HW facilities in Data\Facilities.txt. Phased Shield Generation is the first ability for each of the HW facilities, which are located right at the top of the file. So long as you make sure to modify all of them to the same value, it will be fair.

AHHH! Cheers guys. I was banging my head off the wall trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. I feel a lot better now I can leave them for awhile and go conquer the rest of the universe.
